Each fall, the All Saints Episcopal Church Garden Tour board conducts a competition looking for artists who would like to enter artwork depicting flowers or a garden in a poster competition. The winning artwork will appear on the Garden Tour poster and on the front of the Tour booklet, which also serves as a ticket.
This year, 51 artists submitted artwork in the competition. During February, the art was exhibited at Hilton Head Regional Medical Center.
The art was judged by professional artists for inclusion in the poster. In addition, the public was asked to vote for their favorite picture. At a reception March 3 at Hilton Head Hospital, attended by about 100 artists, family members and friends, the winners were announced.
The six finalists' artwork was juried twice. The first time, they were judged from the actual artwork for excellence and appropriateness to the garden theme. The second time, mock-ups were created of the finished poster cover, using the six pieces to determine the strongest piece graphically.
The six finalists were Suzanne Aulds, Margo Duke, Dana Guazzo, Willeke Heijens, Jeanie Hooper and Donna Varner.
The winner, whose painting "Coneflowers" will appear on the poster and booklet cover, was Suzanne Aulds. In mid-April, posters featuring the stunning pink coneflowers will appear around the Island and throughout Bluffton.
There was a tie for the People's Choice competition. Both Wilma Borocz's "Welcome Spring" and Bob Ovelman's "A Garden Symphony" artworks were selected by the public.
The 32nd All Saints Garden Tour will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 18. The 2019 tour features seven gardens on Hilton Head Island and in Bluffton, providing inspiration for garden lovers.
Tickets for the tour are $35 each, which includes lunch, and are available now at allsaintsgardentour.com. They will be on sale at local nurseries and merchants in mid-April. For more information, visit the website or call 843-681-8333.
