Palmetto Electric Cooperative responds to coronavirus outbreak

The health and safety of Palmetto Electric's members and employees is always our top priority, and we want you to know we are continuing to monitor the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. We're committed to helping both our members and employees navigate this difficult situation, and our thoughts are with everyone impacted by the coronavirus.

As of Friday, March 27, we have made the following updates that we want our members to be aware of.

Palmetto Electric's office lobbies will remain CLOSED until at least April 17. The drive-thru will remain open at each office. Palmetto Electric offers several electronic options for members to manage their accounts and make payments.

  • MyEnergy Online
  • MyEnergy Mobile App - manage your account from your phone or tablet!
  • IVR phone number (automated phone payment at 1-866-445-5551)
  • Bank Draft/Auto Pay
  • Payments can be taken at the drive-thru or night drop box at each district office.

We are continuing the temporary suspension of disconnects for non-payment on ALL accounts, including Advance Pay until at least April 17. Late fees on ALL accounts will also be waived. We know that these are uncertain and stressful times, and we hope that this offers members some peace of mind. We encourage all members, including Advance Pay, to continue to make payments, as they are able. All members are still responsible for their electric use.

The Community Rooms located at the Hilton Head, New River and Ridgeland offices will remain CLOSED until at least April 30. Any scheduled events will be cancelled.

The Palmetto Electric Board of Directors has made the decision to POSTPONE the Annual Meeting, originally scheduled for Saturday, May 2. The nominating process for Board elections has also been postponed. We will notify all members as soon as the Annual Meeting has been rescheduled and the nominating process resumes.

For more information, visit palmetto.coop or call 843-208-5551.

Heritage Library

Over the past several days, as organizations like the CDC, State of South Carolina, the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control and the Town of Hilton Head Island have strengthened their advisories and warnings, it has become clear that caution is the best way for us to proceed. Governor McMaster's latest communications have included direct instructions to cancel certain types of gatherings and events, and we will heed that advice.

The health and well-being of the community, our volunteers, membership and patrons is a top priority of the Heritage Library. In an effort to prevent the spread of COVID-19, and keep our patrons, members and volunteers safe, the Heritage Library is limiting services and activities at the Library and our sites until further notice.
- History & Happy Hour - War & Wine, has been postponed. Tickets that have been purchased will be refunded and we will publish a new date when it is once again safe to plan events and gatherings.

- Tours at Zion Cemetery, Ft. Mitchel and Bike tours are currently scheduled to start in mid-April. This schedule will change if necessary. Please visit the website for additional information and start dates and times.

- The Library is offering very limited services. This could change based on recommendations and directives from local, state and national authorities and experts. Please call us at 843.686.6560 for additional information.

- Online Resources - while students, teachers, parents and the general public are at home, we encourage you to take advantage of our online resources and learn about local history and ancestry. Students and Teachers - there is an abundance of information on the Revolutionary War, Civil War, Mitchelville, Reconstruction and more, including teaching curriculum built for Hilton Head Island students. You can find the curriculum, offered totally for free, here. https://heritagelib.org/teacher-resources-general-info

We are extremely grateful to the communities which the HHSO serves and, particularly, to the many people and organizations that form our Symphony "family;" specifically, our patrons, donors, volunteers, staff, and musicians. Dear Friends of the Lowcountry Speaker Series,

These are unprecedented times. We have been closely monitoring the COVID-19 updates from local, state and federal officials and now know that the Town of Hilton Head Island and other local governments in South Carolina have issued a State of Emergency.

Your safety and welfare are of the utmost importance, which is why I have decided to postpone the April 7 lecture with Robert O'Neill, the 2020 season-ending event. I am working diligently with Robert O'Neill and others to schedule a new date for this lecture, while keeping in mind that many of you are seasonal residents of the Lowcountry. All tickets will be completely transferrable to the rescheduled date. There are no refunds.

In the coming weeks, I will announce the new date for the Robert O'Neill lecture and also hope to provide you with information about the 2021 lecture season at that time.

For updates, please visit the Lowcountry Speaker Series website at www.lowcountryspeakerseries.com or follow us on Facebook @lowcountryspeakerseries, Instagram @lowcountryspeakers, or Twitter @lcspeakerseries. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

The Roasting Room

The Great Wait.

In light of the CDC's decision yesterday to limit gatherings to 50, and the president upping the ante to 10 people or less, we're pretty much in a Code Red situation with our March & April calendar.

Here's an update on each upcoming scheduled show (and a window into what my past 4 days has been all about):

MARCH:
Fri 20th - Marbin - CANCELLED
Sat 21st - Jon McLaughlin - POSTPONED to October 22
Mon 23rd - Keith Harkin - POSTPONED to October 30
Fri 27th - Mary Fahl - POSTPONED to October 9
Fri 28th - Pryor & Lee - Working on Contingency dates

APRIL:
Thurs 2nd - Vanessa Collier - On as Scheduled*
Fri 10th - Time Sawyer - On as Scheduled*
Sat 11th - Sara Burns - On as Scheduled*
Mon 13th - Pat McGee - Working on Contingency dates
Wed 15th - Slaid Cleaves - On as Scheduled*
Sat 18th - Penny & Sparrow - Working on Contingency dates
Thurs 23rd - Brendan James - On as Scheduled*
Fri 24th - Lovers Leap - On as Scheduled*
Thurs 30th - Lyn Avenue - On as Scheduled*

The May schedule will remain unchanged*

* Naturally, the status of these shows are subject to change.

Here at the Roasting Room, transparency and timely communication are the cornerstone to our success. When an event is officially changed, the first ones to know are the ticket holders, followed by the general public. As for transparency, I'm happy to report that so far we've weathered the potential storm of refunding en masse. As the April calendar gets sorted out, I urge you to hang onto your tickets as long as there's a rescheduled date in place. That being said, if a refund needs to be processed, we'll certainly do so without question. We're all in this together.

And so it begins. Let's all stay well, wash our hands, and wait for this sickness to pass.

Love always,
- Jordan Ross

Village at Wexford:

Shop Hop Event Update

Due to concern of the health and wellness for our community, we are postponing the Spring Shop Hop on Saturday, March 28th. We hope this doesn't cause any inconvenience and your friends and loved ones stay safe and well.

Stay Safe While Supporting Your Local Businesses

Now, more than ever, the Lowcountry's local businesses need your support. Even during these challenging times, our restaurants, shops and experience businesses remain open, ready to serve you - taking extra steps to keep our community safe.

If the threat of the coronavirus is making you apprehensive about going out to dinner, shopping, or just going out to have a coffee, here's a suggestion: please consider purchasing a gift certificate/card instead. Spend the money now and hold onto that gift certificate/card for when the time is right. That way you're still supporting local businesses, and you can enjoy their services at a later date. The coronavirus won't be around forever, but you can help ensure that our local businesses are.

We are monitoring the situation closely by staying informed with the most up-to-date information from the Center for Disease Control, World Health Organization, and South Carolina Department of Health. In the meantime, please follow us on Facebook for the latest updates about what's happening at Village at Wexford.

Food Storage Safety & Longevity Tips from Chef Lynn Michelle

We are monitoring the coronavirus (COVID-19) situation closely and staying informed with the most up-to-date information from the Center for Disease Control, World Health Organization, and South Carolina Department of Health. We want to assure you that are taking it seriously and understand this is a time of uncertainty, but intend to do everything in our power to keep our community safe, healthy, and calm.

With that being said, the CDC has recommended that you have enough household items and groceries on hand so that you will be prepared to stay at home for a period of time, however we are being asked not to to hoard essential food supplies - so we wanted to share the following food storage tips with you to help try and ease some of the stress from the uncertainty of the situation happening around us:

Freeze in portion control containers to prevent waste. Make spaghetti sauce with extra ground beef and freeze the sauce in portion control containers. Make up a yummy Chicken Noodle Soup to freeze! Make chicken soup and leave the noodles out of the soup. Freeze it! Add noodles as you serve the soup to prevent the noodles from becoming soggy and not freezing well.

Pre-portioned, frozen meats will reduce waste. Place extra meat, chicken, fish, seafood, bacon in portion controlled freezer bags containers. Make up your burgers and package them ready to go in the freezer. Or place the items to be frozen into the corners of the freezer bags so there is space in between for portion control. Don't lump the meat together and freeze.

Use the correct baking dishes. When freezing, use freezer-to-oven or freezer-to-microwave dishes and cover the surface with plastic freezer wrap or heavy-duty foil

Use your foil wisely. Do not use foil to wrap foods that contain acidic ingredients, such as tomatoes. Acid reacts with the foil, giving the food an odd flavor. To refrigerate or freeze a casserole that contains tomatoes or another acidic ingredient, first cover the food with plastic wrap, then with foil; remove the plastic wrap before reheating.

Label your food. Always take a moment to properly label food before you freeze it. Using a wax crayon or waterproof marking pen, note on the package: 1. The name of the item or recipe, 2. An estimate of the number of servings or quantity remaining, 3. The date it was frozen, 4. Any special information about its use, 5.Follow recommended storage times included in recipes.

When in doubt, consult a food storage chart. Follow the guidelines from Foodsafety.gov for storing food in the refrigerator and freezer, click here.
