Omni Resort's burger the best you've (probably) never had
I've come to learn in my travels with "Eat It and Like It" that, at least around here, there are some dishes that people are more passionate about than others.
Barbecue might make people fight, or at the very least argue. Fried chicken will always stir a debate, especially when someone's grandmother is mentioned, and they always are.
Chicken wings are trouble makers as well. Mention 10 different places with great wings and someone will ask you about number 11. It always happens that way.
There is, however, nothing that compares to the rise I see in people when we discuss burgers. Well, I'm here to tell you about one you very likely haven't tried yet.
I've made no secret in the past of just how big a fan I am of HH Prime at the Omni Hilton Head Oceanfront Resort. That is just a great steakhouse.
Is it an Old Homestead, Keens or Gibson's kind of great steakhouse? No, of course not. But around here I believe it is the best we've got. Yes, it is very, very good.
A little over a year ago, their "sports bar" got a little makeover. XO Sports and Spirits Bar has a ton of televisions to watch a game - pretty much any game. They have an assortment of usual suspects when it comes to food. Nachos, chicken strips and flatbreads. Good munchies for a ball game.
But the showstopper on that property is the burger.
I made it over there with my daughter to see the newly renovated space. Beautiful, of course. But we also got to try a few dishes. Chef Graham then said, "I want you to try this burger."
Have you ever been served a plate of food and you think it looks good, so you have a good expectation, then you take a bite?
It was so tasty my daughter started laughing. I share that story regularly. It was the best burger I'd had in a while.
Nothing special really - lettuce, tomato and onion along with a special sauce on a brioche bun. Simple, yet crafted perfectly. It was so good, we gave the Omni our Eat It and Like It Foodie Award for the best burger in the region. Yes, it was that good.
I've seen Chef Graham a couple of times since then. I always ask about the burger as if it's one of his children. "Doing great," he says. "It has become, by far, our No. 1 seller out here." See? It's not just me.
Like so many of us, the Omni took a wallop from Hurricane Matthew last fall. They were forced to close the restaurant for three months while the property got a nice facelift - just some nip and tucks here and there.
You don't have to be a guest at the hotel to enjoy their food, so take a ride out to the Omni and "Eat It and Like It."
