Town waives penalties for business license renewals

The Town of Hilton Head Island announced March 18 that all penalties and late fees associated with business license renewals will be waived through June 20.

Town code mandates that business licenses must be renewed by April 30. But, given the circumstances with the coronavirus (COVID-19), Town officials are giving a break to business owners who might not meet that deadline.

"As businesses deal with the impact of the coronavirus on their operations, we want to provide as much support as we can to help them through this difficult period. We will make adjustments as we can to assist our local businesses amidst cancellations, a drop in business and an overall downturn in the economy," said Town Manager Steve Riley.

Town Hall now is closed to the public. Thus, business owners should complete renewals online through the Town's website at hiltonheadislandsc.gov. Most business owners with a valid 2019 business license and no change to their name or address are eligible to renew their business license online.

On the site, select the Online Services tab; in the drop-down box, click on the Business Related Fee/Tax Payment link. Enter the business license number and your PIN code (found on your renewal form) and follow the step-by-step instructions to make your payment.

Exceptions to the online renewal process are business licenses requiring special processing, such as but not limited to mobile food operators, distributors of pool tables or amusement machines and taxi accounts. Business owners in these categories should call the Revenue and Services office at 843-341-4677.
